Carpet Pages
Highly decorative and vividly colored pages common in Insular illuminated manuscripts. They usually contain geometric designs, intricate patterns of interlace, and animal forms (source). Carpet pages may have been intentionally designed to resemble prayer mats which were widely used during that time to help prepare worshippers for prayer. Above are images of the carpet pages from the Lindisfarne Gospels (c. 715). Located at the beginning of each book, they might have also helped prepare readers for the messages of the Gospel (source).
